BUDAPEST: The initiative of the National Film Institute – Hungary (NFI) to annually celebrate the day of 30 April, when the first film with dramatised scenes, A Táncz by Béla Zsitkovszky, was presented in 1901, is met in 2023 with numerous events in cinemas and also on TV and streaming platforms.

Five films selected by the audience are available for free on FILMIO, the NFI's streaming platform, from 27 to 30 April 2023, when FILMIO will launch a virtual exhibition about the past of Hungarian cinema. This is an online version of the exhibition held at the Ludwig Museum in 2021, when the material was presented on a surface of nearly 1,000 m².

Over the weekend, Cinema City will screen domestic films at a discounted price, while the Uránia National Film Theater will screen only Hungarian films in its three halls.

Almost 100 classic and new Hungarian films will be shown on public media channels RTL and TV2, and also on Cool TV, Hír TV, ATV Spirit, Prime, Magyar Mozi TV and on the Mozi+ channel.

Both old favourites and new releases await viewers for a larger period of time on the streaming platforms Cinego, HBO Max and RTL+.

"There is no question that Hungarian film deserves a famous day. Looking at the diverse holiday offer, I am sure that everyone will find something to their liking", said Csaba Káel, the president of the NFI, in a statement.
