Latvian Film Centre Announces 2014 Grants

    RIGA: National Film Centre of Latvia will give nearly 1.5 m EUR in grants to 28 projects.

    An expert commission consisting of director Andis Miziss, animator Edmunds Jansons, and representative Film Centre representative Uldis Dimisevskis selected the films to receive a total of 1,489,135 EUR was distributed among 28 projects.

    Four feature films received 59% of the funds, 878,590 EUR. The largest grant, 400,000 EUR, went to auteur film director Laila Pakalnina's film Ausma produced by her own company Hargla. Davis Simanis' historical WW1 drama Sanatorium of Ashes (Pelnu Sanatorija) received 42,686 EUR to complete production. The film is produced by Roberts Vinovskis from Locomotive Productions and stars German actor Ulrich Matthes (Downfall, The Ninth Day). Raimonds Vimba's feature I Am Here (Es Esmu Seit) produced by Tasse Film received 185,000 EUR, leaving the blockbuster producting/directing team of Andrejs Ekis (Platforma) and Aigars Grauba's latest historical epic Namej's Ring (Nameja gredzens) received 250,904 EUR for the first period of shooting.

    Documentaries received 268,044 EUR (18% of the total sum) going to 15 films, and 342,501 EUR (23% of the total) went to nine animation films.
