By

{mosimage}GDYNIA: Agnieszka Holland's Oscar nominated In Darkness swept most of the major prizes at the 37 Gdynia Polish Film Festival (wwwfpff.pl ) winning a Golden Lion for Best Film, as well the awards for best director, best cinematography and best actor and best actress for Agnieszka Grochowska and Robert Więckiewicz.

Tipped by critics for the international festival circuit was Piotr Trzaskalski's much admired My Father's Bike produced by Frederico Film (www.fredericofilm.com) which won the Polish Film Festivals and Reviews Abroad Award. Trzaskalski's previous film Edi produced by Opusfilm (www.opusfilm.com) was a major international festival hit. In the parallel Young Cinema Competition the main prize went to director Mateusz Głowacki for When the Light of Dawn Arises.

The annual event which showcases the best of the annual Polish production was held 7-12 May 2012. Gdynia has shifted dates several times in the past few years and the pre-Cannes date was selected because an after Cannes date would have conflicted with the European Football Championship to be hosted in Poland at the beginning of June. Next year the event is expected to revert to its September slot as the musical theatre on the Baltic Sea which is its traditional home will be closed for reconstruction until autumn of 2013.
