PRODUCTION: Królikiewicz Developing Historical Drama

By

WARSAW: The acclaimed avant-garde Polish film director and screenwriter, Grzegorz Królikiewicz is in development with Samuel Zborowski, a historical costume feature drama based on a seventeenth century adventurer.

The film, described as a universal story of moral and political conflicts over law and order versus the human craving for freedom, tells the tale of Samuel Zborowski, a favorite of the nobility who habitually broke the law, resulting in his public execution. The dramatic event spurred the conflict between the masses and the powerful figures of authorities and is still called “the Samuel Zborowski open case.”

“Many commentators were trying to figure out the truth, yet nobody ever discovered the extraordinary structure that may be found within Zborowski’s life story, which could be called the dialectical unity of contradictions,” the director said.

Samuel Zborowski received a development grant of 92,028 PLN (22,370 EUR from the Polish Film Institute (www.pisf.pl). The budget is expected to be about 7 m PLN. The film is produced by Bogna Janiec for Studio Filmowe N (www.filmstudio.com.pl). A search is on for coproducers and sales agents

The film premiere is planned for 2014, the 430th anniversary of Samuel Zborowski’s death.
