Hatred / Wołyń is a drama set in the south-western part of Volhynia, a region populated by Ukrainians, Poles and Jews, in 1939. Zosia Głowacka is in love with a Ukrainian boy from her village, but her father decides to marry her to the richest farmer, a Polish widower much older than herself and with two children.
"It is a hard film about the truth that just can't be omitted. I tried to do it honestly, and if it makes somebody uncomfortable, there is nothing I can do about it," the director said.
The film was produced by Dariusz Pietrykowski through Film it in coproduction with Narodowy Instytut Audiowizualny, Denaro – Paweł Karpiński, Canal+ (ITI Neovision), Bemar, Telewizja Polska, Andrzej Łudziński Productions, Odra-Film, Narodowe Centrum Kultury and OXY Net.
The budget is 3.2 m EUR / 14 m PLN, of which 1.3 m EUR / 6 m PLN was covered by a grant from the Polish Film Institute. The producers also gathered 583,000 EUR / 2.5 m PLN though a crowd funding campaign.
The film will premiere at the Gdynia Film Festival and will open in Polish cinemas on 7 October 2016. Forum Film Polska is distributing.
