PRODUCTION: Polish-German Winter Daddy in post-production

By

One of the most promising projects supported by the Polish-German Co-Development Fund, Winter Daddy, directed by Johannes Schmid, is the story of 11-year-old Kattaka, who travels from Germany to Poland in search of her biological father. She only knows that he is a Russian sailor named Alexei whose ship moors in Gdynia till New Year's Eve. Kattaka and a boy from her neighborhood set off on the journey in an old Barkas bus driven by her nana, a 70-year-old relocated from East Prussia.

The film is a Polish-German co-production realized by Pokromski Studio (www.pokromskistudio.pl) and Schlicht und Ergreifend GmbH (www.schlichtundergreifend-film.de) in co-operation with German TV broadcasters RBB (www.rbb-online.de), BR (www.br-online.de), MDR (www.mdr.de), NDR (www.ndr.de) and SWR (www.swr.de). The principal photography took place in February and March in Jena (Germany) and Polish Pomeranian cities Gdynia, Gdańsk and Szczecin.

The budget is €1,940,000. Winter Daddy was co-financed with 1 million PLN (€254 000) from the Polish Film Institute (www.pisf.pl) and is one of the projects developed with the support of the German-Polish Co-Development Fund (www.medienboard.de), which supported the film with €270,500. The project has also received 465,000 PLN from the Gdyński Film Fund (www.centrumkulturygdynia.org), €250 000 from the German fund BKM (www.bundesregierung.de,), €200 000 from MDM (www.mdm-online.de), €200 000 from the German Federal Film Board (www.ffa.de) and €200 000 from the Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg (www.medienboard.de).

Winter Daddy was presented as a model of international cooperation project during this year's edition Warsaw Script Forum (www.latofilmow.pl). "We wanted to create a quality and entertaining family movie focusing on the younger audience," said producer Mikołaj Pokromski during the presentation. "There is a noticeable void in the genre in the European cinema that we are hoping to fill." Currently in post-production, the film will have its Polish premiere in December 2011.
