Polish director Andrzej Kotkowski wins best director at Cairo FF for Born of the Sea

    CAIRO: Born of the Sea by Polish director Andrzej Kotkowski got the Best Director Prize at the 34th edition of the Cairo International Film Festival that concluded on 9 December. The festival presented over 100 films and welcomed Richard Gere and Juliette Binoche as honorary guests this year.

    Produced by Profilm and TVP and backed by the Polish Film Instistute, based on Stanisława Fleszarowa's book, Born of the Sea features the process of building of the city of Gdynia in the early 1920s. Against the background of the loves and struggles of a few young characters, the film shows the work of engineers and thousands of people from all the levels of society that united in the effort of building a city that changed the political and economical situation of the Baltic Sea region.

    Born of the Sea was one of the 17 feature films shown in the Cairo IFF's competition. In the festival's Digital Competition also the international premiere of the TVP's Panopticon by Barbara Kurzaj and Sławomir Shuty took place.
