Slovakia nominates Broken Promise for Oscar race

    The Slovak Film and Television Academy (SFTA) has nominated the film Broken Promise (directed by Jiri Chlumsky) as the Slovak entry for the Best Foreign Language Film Academy Award 2010.

    SFTA members selected the film from among 10 titles eligible for the nomination according to the criteria of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences:

    My Husband´s Women (dir. I. Vojnár)

    Osadné (dir. M. Škop, documentary)

    Small Celebrations (dir. Z. Tyc)

    Soul at Peace (dir. V. Balko)

    Broken Promise is based on a true story of a Jewish boy, Martin Friedmann, born in 1926 in Western Slovakia, who escaped deportation to a concentration camp thanks to his extraordinary soccer talent and some coincidently favorable circumstances.

    Since its world premiere at the Los Angeles Jewish Film Festival (www.sfjff.org, Main festival award for the best fiction film), Broken Promise has participated at numerous international film festivals, including Shanghai IFF 2009 (www.siff.com), Karlovy Vary IFF 2009 (www.kviff.com), and Festroia IFF 2009 (Silver Dolphin Award for the Best Actor Samuel Spišák) (www.festroia.pt). The film will also be shown at Pusan IFF 2009 (www.piff.org).
