The international box office success Loving Vincent, produced by BreakThru Films and Trademark Films, was nominated in the animation category and King of the Belgians, produced by Entre Chien et Loup (Belgium), Art Fest (Bulgaria), and Topkapi Films (Netherlands), was nominated in the European Comedy category.

Four films are competing in each category. The nominated films will be submitted to the more than 3,000 EFA Members to elect the winner. The European Comedy 2017 and the European Animated Feature Film 2017 will be presented at the 30th European Film Awards Ceremony on 9 December in Berlin.
