VARNA: Peter Popzlatev’s feature This Time Is Ours will screen in the main competition of the 36th Golden Rose National Film Festival (27 September - 4 October 2018). It is another of the director’s personal looks at Bulgaria’s post-totalitarian reality using the framework of a tense criminal intrigue.

The script written by Stanislav Semerdjiev follows the sophisticated relationship between writer Martin Sestrimsky and State Security Service officer Boyan Tillev before and after the collapse of the Communism. A very special file with long-term consequences, an obscure young woman with a double identity and suddenly enriched former communists form the multilayered construction of the plot.

“On 10 November 1989 Bulgaria experienced a kind of a revolution. As it profoundly marked our youth, I put a lot of energy into showing the metamorphoses of that time“, Popzlatev told FNE. “The main part of the story is happening shortly after the political changes, but it is consciously cut with temporal inversions”, he added.

Popular actors Rushen Vidinliev, Elena Telbis, Leonid Yovchev, Irini Jambonas, Itzhak Fintzi, Krasimir Dokov, Ivaylo Hristov, Svetlana Yancheva and Valentin Ganev play characters equal in power.

Shooting took place across four seasons between 2014 and 2015. Various abandoned factories, warehouses, cafes from the 90s, the Ministry of Interior and the Vitosha and Lyulin mountains are among the main locations. “Most of the archive materials were shot by me”, Popzlatev also said. Montreal-based DoP Stefan Ivanov lensed the film.

Popzlatev produced through Post Scriptum 2 with the support of the Bulgarian National Film Center. The budget is almost 700,000 EUR.

The domestic release is planned for 2019.
