French films hold the third spot on the Czech market with some 40 films distributed each year at 400,000 admissions, nearly 4% of the Czech market.
"There are nine distributors in the Czech Republic buying French films," Giordano said. "The French sales agents say it's very good to work with Central European countries." Poland, Slovakia and Hungary also rank highly for French film distribution, which Giordano says is due in part to increased economic power in the region.
Comedies are the most popular, which Giordano attributes to their French mix of drama and humor with plenty of dryness and sarcasm tossed into the mix. The two most successful French films currently are La Belle et la Bete and Belle et Sebastien.
Giordano, who has been in her post for almost one year, told FNE she's a cinephile who want to support French films. "We are here to discuss with distributors the potential for French films. We have to bring more of our actors and directors to the festival," she said, especially younger generation rising stars. Giordano who brings a background in journalism to her new job, says she's inspired by U.S. film promotion strategy, and will focus on more personal visits to the region and increased marketing.
