FESTIVALS: Austria's Lilian Wins Best Film at CINEDAYS European Film Festival

    SKOPJE: The Austrian road film Lilian directed by Andreas Horvath scooped the best film award in the official selection of the 18th Festival of European Film Cinedays, which ended on 16 November 2019.

    The jury composed of Vladimir Angelov, director of Cinemathèque of North Macedonia, film editor and programmer Mariana Gaivao, and cinematographer/director/writer Chiara Caterina, selected Horvath`s debut out of eight films in the Official Selection.

    Mehmet Akif Büyükatalay won the best director award for Oray (Germany) and the main actor Zejhun Demirov received a special mention. Mounia Meddour received the best screenplay award for Papicha (Algeria, France, Belgium, Katar).

    Svetla Tsotsorkova's second feature film Sister / Sestra (Bulgaria, Qatar) was named best out of the six films in the CineBalkan competition. A special mention in this selection was given to Aga’s House (Kosovo, Croatia, France, Albania) directed by Lendita Zeqiraj. The jury consisted of Albanian film director and screenwriter Kujtim Çashku, Macedonian actress Natasha Petrovic, and actress, casting director and CEO of Duart European Actors Platform, Sanja Drakulić.

    This year the festival introduced a new award for best music in an auteur film, which went into the hands of composer Michal Novinski for the music in By a Sharp Knife / Ostrým nožom (Slovakia, Czech Republic) directed by Teodor Kuhn.  

    The student film award went to White Room by Mladen Stanic. In collaboration with Giffoni Macedonia Youth Film Festival, the Young film award went to Papicha by Mounia Meddour.
