VALLETTA: Austrian director Wolfgang Fischer has wrapped a 33 day shoot in Malta for his sophomore film Styx. A coproduction between Berlin’s Schiwago Film and Amour Fou in Vienna, with executive production by Small Island Films in Malta, Styx depicts the transformation of a strong woman on a solo sailing trip.

From a budget of 2.5 m EUR, about a third was spent in Malta. Servicing on the island was handled by Twenty13 Productions Ltd.

The production took a brazen stance in logistical and narrative terms. “We knew that we were going to film 95% of Styx on open water, in inclement weather. This has led to a constant process of adaptation, which gives the film a very realistic feel”, said Marcos Kantis, producer at Schiwago.

Featuring Susanne Wolff (Return to Montauk) and newcomer Gedion Wekesa Oduor in the lead roles, with lensing by Benedict Neuenfels (The Counterfeiters), the production has also used the tanks and storm generation facilities at the Malta Film Studios.
