PRODUCTION: Polish Czech Slovak Documentary Series Gottland

By

WARSAW: A cross-genre documentary series based on the international bestseller Gottland (European book of the year 2009) by Mariusz Szczygieł is in production as a seven-episode series directed by seven documentary filmmakers.

Gottland observes Czech history from the losers’ point of view and examine the nerve points of Czech and European history and so called “heroes” of the Czech nation.

“We had three reasons to get involved in this project,” Centrala representative Paweł Kosuń told FNE. “First of all, we were delighted with Mariusz Szczygieł’s book. Secondly, we appreciate the diversity of cinematic forms (animation, archive footage and fiction) the directors use while shooting. We believe that kind of collage will guarantee the originality of the series. Thirdly, as Ken Loach does with his Spirit of ’45, we plan to run a social media platform based on the series.”

Gottland series is Polish-Czech-Slovak coproduction. The leading producer is Nutprodukce, which also produced Angieszka Holland’s HBO series Burning Bush (Płonący krzew). The film is coproduced by Poland’s Centrala, Slovakia’s BFILM and co-financed by Polish Film Institute, the Czech Film Center, FAMUpublic broadcaster Czech Television and the Slovak Audiovisual Fund. The budget is 340,000 EUR.

The film will be shot in July and August 2013. Seven days of shooting will take place in Poland, which will also provide original music and some post-production.

The series premiere is scheduled for 2014.
