ODESSA: Edith Sepp the head of the Estonian Film Institute and Chair of the Film New Europe Association presented Film New Europe and the opportunities it offers to the European film industry at the recent Creative Europe Seminar at the Odessa IFF held on 22 July.

The FNE project is supported by the Creative Europe MEDIA programme as well as the members of the FNE Association.

Edith Sepp told FNE: “Film New Europe Association is always looking for occasions to spread the news about our activities and its newswire. It was a great chance to introduce FNE to new-new Europe countries, as Dag Asbjornsen playfully pointed out.”

Dag Asbjørnsen who is Directorate General for Communications Networks, Content and Technology (DG CONNECT), European Commission presented the current state of play for countries who want to participate in the programme.
Polish producer Dariusz Jablonski who is a member of Film New Europe Association and the director of ScriptEast gave a presentation of ScripTeast at the event.

Jablonski told FNE: “It was a very friendly occasion for presenting Creative Europe MEDIA activities to audiovisual industry of Eastern Partnership countries. I presented probably the only Eastern Europe focused training programme to the very high level of interest from all filmmakers present.

ScripTeast waited for a long time for the possibility of inviting EP scriptwriters. In 2015 for the first time we invited two scripts: Venice by Rusudan Chkonia (Georgia) and When the Trees Fall by Marysia Nikitiuk (Ukraine), which was awarded with the Krzysztof Kieslowski ScripTeast Award for Best Eastern European Script. There was an impressive amount of applications from EP countries for 2016. More generally, I would say that in my view MEDIA should be given additional funding from EU budget for opening its activities to EP countries even more effectively.”

At the same seminar Tamara Tatishvili from European Film Promotion presented European Film Promotion under the aegis of “Possibilities in MEDIA supported projects in EU”.

Success stories from the first years of participation in Creative Europe MEDIA programme were presented by: Artchil Khetagouri from Tbilisi International Documentary Film Festival (Georgia), Tea Gabidzashvili from Film club pilots (Georgia), Orest Dabija from Chronograph Festival (Moldova), Denis Ivanov from Operation Kino (Ukraine) and Iryna Vikyrchak from CE Desk Ukraine.

The main prize of Odessa IFF was awarded this year to  Illegitimate (Romania, Poland, France) by the Romanian director Adrian Sitaru. This independent film is produced by Domestic Film in coproduction with Film Produkcja and Damned Films.
