CANNES: One of the more unusual and personal films which will be showcased with a Special Screening at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival is Propeller One-Way Night Coach, the directorial debut of actor and aviation enthusiast John Travolta. Screened in the Cannes Première section of the festival, the film marked a significant milestone in Travolta’s long career, not only because it was his first feature as a director, but also because it was based on a children’s book he wrote nearly three decades ago.

Written, directed, narrated and co-produced by Travolta, the film adapts his 1997 children’s novel of the same name. Set during the golden age of commercial aviation in the early 1960s, the story follows a young boy named Jeff, played by newcomer Clark Shotwell, who embarks on a cross-country flight to Hollywood with his mother. What begins as a simple journey gradually becomes an adventure filled with memorable passengers, unexpected stopovers and the wonder of air travel during an era when flying was considered glamorous and exciting. The experience shapes the boy’s future and fuels his fascination with aviation.

The project has a deeply autobiographical dimension. Travolta has long been known for his passion for flying and is a licensed pilot who owns several aircraft. According to festival materials, the film draws inspiration from his childhood memories and lifelong love of aviation. The actor also appears in the film as an older version of Jeff and serves as its narrator.

The cast includes Kelly Eviston-Quinnett as Jeff’s mother, while Travolta’s daughter, Ella Bleu Travolta, plays one of the flight attendants encountered during the journey. Olga Hoffmann and Edouard Philipponnat also appear in supporting roles. Travolta described casting his daughter as “serendipitous,” noting that her presence added an extra layer of warmth to the production.

Although best known as an actor, Travolta has enjoyed one of Hollywood’s most varied careers. He became a global star through films such as Saturday Night Fever and Grease, later reinventing himself with his acclaimed performance in Pulp Fiction. Other notable titles in his filmography include Get Shorty, Face/Off, Primary Colours and Hairspray. Propeller One-Way Night Coach represents his first time directing a feature film.

At the festival’s press activities, Travolta also spoke about embracing his new role as a filmmaker. Explaining his much-discussed Cannes appearance in a beret, he joked: “The old school directors wore berets and the glasses. And I thought, that’s what I’m doing.”

Presented as a family-oriented adventure filled with nostalgia for the jet age, Propeller One-Way Night Coach stands as a highly personal project for Travolta. By combining childhood memories, aviation history and a coming-of-age story, the film offered Cannes audiences a glimpse into a side of the actor that had never before been seen on screen: John Travolta the filmmaker.
