Call for entries for the International Competition Section “Glocal Images”

The Ministry of Education and Culture and the Rialto Theatre announce that Calls for Entries for the 11th CYPRUS FILM DAYS - International Film Festival 2013, are now open. The festival, which is being held for the 11th time this year, will host for the 3rd consecutive year a separate international competition section entitled “Glocal Images”, in which filmmakers from around the globe and Cyprus are invited to submit their fiction films. The films participating in the competition section will be selected by the festival’s artistic committee: Adonis Florides (Film director), Dr. Costas Constandinides (Academic) and Constantinos Sarkas (Journalist). This year’s festival will take place from the 19th to the 28th of April 2013 in Nicosia and in Limassol as in previous years.

US IN PROGRESS is the first industry event in Europe devoted entirely to US-indies and focused on the completion and European distribution of American indie feature films at post-production stage.

30th November–6th December Ankara, 7th–10th December Sinop

Organized by the Ankara Cinema Association with the support of the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the 18th Festival on Wheels is preparing to hook up with film audiences between 30th November and 10th December. The show will, as always, get on the road in Ankara, where screenings are scheduled for 30th November-6th December. After leaving the capital, the Festival will head straight for the Black Sea to Sinop, one of last year’s hosts, to continue its programme with the support of the Governorship of Sinop, the Municipality of Sinop and the Sinop Culture and Tourism Association from 7th-10th December.

Argo is the hugely entertaining third film by actor-director Ben Affleck. it is that rarest of things: a mainstream thriller that is as intelligent as it is entertaining. As such, it is the perfect end to five days of American films.

HELSINKI: Finnish film admissions are on track to equal or surpass the 2010 record, with 2.05 m admissions to date, a 30 percent share of the 2012 market.

MALTA: The Malta Film Fund (www.mfc.com.mt) distributed 239,000 EUR for domestic production and it was announced that three films are scheduled to shoot in Malta in 2013.

The films of Jerry Schatzberg, particularly the key works he directed in the 1970s, have been undervalued in the eyes of many critics who, in their survey of American cinema have elevated other directors to iconic status. (He is not alone – Michael Ritchie is another director richly deserving of re-evaluation.) So this brief retrospective, which includes a masterclass with the filmmaker, is a very welcome addition to the third edition of the American Film Festival.
