RIGA: Latvian director Laila Pakalnina receives a two week retrospective of her documentary films at the Paris Pompidou Centre, running through 17 May 2019.

The retrospective will consist of 20 films covering 30 years of her work shown in a series of 14 screenings under the title Laila Pakalniņa. Drôle de reel.

The 20 films in the programme begin chronologically with her 1991 Moscow Film School VGIK graduation work The Linen / Veļa, which later, together with her short films The Ferry / Prāmis (1994) and The Mail / Pasts (1995), formed the Pakalniņa Trilogy collection that brought the director her first big international recognition and the FIPRESCI award at the Cannes Film Festival 1996. Since then Laila Pakalniņa is the only Latvian director whose films have been selected for various programmes in all of the most significant international film festivals including Cannes, Venice and Berlin, and have also received nominations for the European Film Awards.

Laila Pakalniņa’s retrospective in Paris is organised by the Pompidou Centre, the National Film Centre of Latvia and the Embassy of Latvia in France.
