For the sixth time, the RE-ACT (Regional Audiovisual Cooperation and Training) initiative announces its call for project co-development funding and is once again joining forces with First Cut Lab, opening its call for the autumn workshop session for feature fiction films in editing phase. Deadline for applications is 15 November 2020.

The FilmFestival Cottbus has been known for the best cinema from Eastern Europe for 30 years. In the Feature Film Competition at the 30th FilmFestival Cottbus (November 3 to 8, 2020), twelve films from a total of 22 (co-)production countries compete for the main prize of 25,000 euros and the special prize for best director as well as the prize sculpture LUBINA (Sorbian: the Lovely). Eleven of the works celebrate their German premieres in Cottbus. Promising talents compete with star directors, newcomers meet film makers, who are already known in Cottbus, like Oleg Novković, whose film THE LIVING MAN will have its world premiere at the FFC.

Night Riders heading to Lumière Festival!

We are thrilled to announce that digitally restored Slovak classic Night Riders, from the collections of the National Film Archive of the Slovak Film Institute, will be world premiered at the 11th Lumière Festival in Lyon (10 – 18 October 2020).

SFI will also participate in the Marché International du Film Classique.

Ji.hlava is moving to digital asylum. We have always preferred the festival to happen physically as we draw our inspiration primarily from screenings in cinema halls, discussions and personal meetings. However, the situation has changed and we respect that. Therefore, we want to see the currently closed cinemas in the Czech Republic as an opportunity and a challenge. This year again, we will treat you to a full-fledged festival programme as well as the tenth edition of the Inspiration Forum, sharing all the events online, in a surprising and engaging form. In the face of the Coronavirus the Lithuanian film industry has encountered and still encounters serious challenges. Thanks to close collaboration with the film industry, Lithuanian Film Centre has efficiently identified the most affected areas and their needs. In an attempt to counter the problems created by the COVID-19 pandemic the film sector was provided with 6.2 million euros funding, which was distributed by the Lithuanian Film Centre. Such multifaceted support for the film sector is the only one in the Baltic States. 

On October 8, the Board members of the European Film Agency Directors association unanimously re-elected Luis Chaby Vaz as EFAD President and Edith Sepp as Vice-President of the association with a 3 year mandate.

Short biographies of the President and Vice-President

Luís Chaby Vaz is since June 2017, President of the Board of Directors of the Institute of Cinema and Audiovisual of Portugal. He began his professional activity in 1993 as a lawyer before entering the cultural sector where he held several public management positions. He also worked in the Advertising industry and in the movie post production sector as CEO of Tobis. He was the Cultural Counselor of the Portuguese Embassy in Spain between 2010 and 2013. After that, he worked in a venture capital firm and as a private consultant.

Edith Sepp has been the CEO of the Estonian Film Institute since 2013. She started her film career in the early 1990s as an assistant director. After graduating with an MA in film and TV drama from the Northern Media School in UK, she worked in the film/TV industry as a film director and producer. In 2010, she became a film adviser to the Estonian Minister of Culture and lead the creation of the Estonian Film Institute’s 2013-2020 strategy. She has been a member of EFAD board since 2014 and she has chaired the EFAD Think-Tank since 2015.
