Events at RIGA IFF 2020 brought together many film industry professionals, experts and cinema-goers – both in person and online. As of today, video recordings of the most engaging public discussions, lectures and interviews have been compiled into an archive that can be found on the festival website.

In the autumn of 2021, the festival will once again invite audiences to enjoy an extensive program dedicated to both cinema lovers and industry professionals from 14 to 24 October. RIGA IFF will welcome submissions to its four competition programmes from March 2021.

Trieste, January 12th, 2021 – The “Out of the Box” edition of When East Meets West kicks off in less than two weeks, on January 25th, with a promising double focus on Israel and Italy. After having revealed the Co-Production Forum project selection, WEMW is now proud to announce that Beatrice Fiorentino (Venice International Film Critics’ Week), Anna Ciennik (Les Arcs European Film Festival) and Una Domazetoski (Film Center Serbia) will be the 2021 jury members and will decide the winners of the Co-Production Forum awards, including the WEMW Film Center Serbia Award of 5.000 EUR cash prize. Alongside these last details, WEMW is happy to finally unveil the complete line-up of the two sections targeting films in post-production stage.

Last year, the Covid-19 pandemic hit all creative industries, and animation was no exception. Many domestic and foreign festivals, where premieres take place and distribution cooperation is negotiated, have been cancelled or moved to the online environment. How did Czech animation creators cope with the limitations and new challenges?

TRIESTE: When East Meets West (WEMW), the 25 – 28 January 2021 industry programme accompanying the Trieste Film Festival, will present five creative documentaries in the seventh edition of Last Stop Trieste, and six festival-ready films in the This is IT works-in-progress line-up.

STRASBOURG: Motherland by Tomas Vengris won the Audience Award of the 2020 edition of ArteKino and Son of Sofia by Elina Psykou won the Young Audience Award. They were among ten films competing in 45 European countries.

BUCHAREST: The acclaimed Romanian director Radu Muntean is currently in postproduction with his seventh feature film Întregalde, which he shot 6 November - 7 December 2020. This independent project is produced by Multimedia Est, the regular outlet behind Muntean's films.

TRIESTE: Twelve films from across the CEE, Baltic and Balkan region will screen in the feature film competition of the 32nd Trieste Film Festival, which runs 21 – 30 January 2021.

BRATISLAVA: The three-day script development workshop MIDPOINT Intensive SK is accepting applications through 11 February 2021. The workshop will take place 30 March to 1 April within the Industry Days of the International Film Festival FEBIOFEST Bratislava.

BUCHAREST: Internationally acclaimed documentary director Alexander Nanau has turned down the “Cultural Merit” medal from Romanian President Klaus Iohannis on the occasion of Romania’s Day of National Culture celebrated on 15 January 2021. The Emmy-award winning director is protesting the lack of government support for the film industry in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.
