Toys, a Lithuanian-Belarus documentary planned for completion in March 2012, was selected for the Institute of Documentary Film's 2011 Ex Oriente programme.

Art Film Fest to present the latest international films, awards to Zuzana Kronerová, Emir Kusturica, among others

Winning films from the most prestigious international festivals such as Cannes, Berlin, Locarno and Venice; exclusive premieres of long-anticipated pictures; the latest Slovak cinema; Asian blockbusters and tributes to cult figures of the film world - all this and more awaits audiences at the nineteenth annual Art Film Fest, held from June 17 to 25 in Trenčianske Teplice and Trenčín.

For the first time in its history, Art Film Fest will be opened by a Slovak film: young director Zuzana Liová's "The House" (Dom), screened to great acclaim at the Berlinale.

As in previous years, Slovak and international performers will be honoured with the Actor's Mission Award for their extraordinary contributions to screen acting. Each of this year's recipients - Slovak cinematic diva Zuzana Kronerová, Hungarian actor János Bán and Czech actor Zdeněk Svěrák, creator of the legendary mythological figure Jára Cimrman - will personally fix a bronze plaque bearing their name in the Festival Park, joining the illustrious ranks of previous winners such as Franco Nero, Jean-Paul Belmondo, Gina Lollobrigida, Geraldine Chaplin and Omar Sharif.

This year's Golden Camera Award will go to three film professionals for their major contributions to filmmaking: Emir Kusturica, the Serbian director with a considerable cult following, Slovak costume designer Milan Čorba and the Oscar-winning French luminary Jean-Claude Carrière.

The nineteenth edition of Art Film Fest will feature a total of 194 films, consisting of 110 feature-length pictures, three medium-length and eighty-one shorts. Among them are nine of the latest award winners from Cannes, acquired just days after the prestigious festival's end.

Our cinematic programme is divided into seventeen sections, including tributes to our award winners. In the International Competition of Feature Films, fifteen pictures will vie for the Blue Angel, including the festival's opening Slovak film and three new releases fresh from Cannes. The winners will be selected by a five-member international jury, helmed by legendary Slovak director Juraj Jakubisko.

The Blue Angel for Best Short Film will go to one of forty-four pictures from around the world, including three Slovak films, in the International Competition of Short Films.

Film connoisseurs will get to sample delicacies of international cinema in the section Around the World, which introduces the exclusive Slovak premieres of extraordinary discoveries from outside Europe, including "The Tree of Life", winner of this year's Palme d'Or. Starring Brad Pitt and Sean Penn, this latest work from enigmatic American director Terrence Malick was Cannes' most anticipated film this year.

European Corner looks at what's new in the old world, presenting the most acclaimed new releases from across our continent.

The section will include the Slovak premiere of "In a Better World" (Hævnen), from notable Danish director Susanne Bier, winner of this year's most prestigious international awards - the Oscar and Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film.

Also in its exclusive Slovak premiere, Art Film Fest will feature "Leaving" (Odcházení), the directorial debut of Václav Havel, former Czech and Czechoslovak president.

Visitors will get the chance to witness Kirsten Dunst's remarkable performance in "Melancholia", a film from controversial Danish director Lars von Trier which earned its star the Best Actress Award at this year's Cannes.

European Corner will even include the latest from Spain's renowned Oscar-winning Pedro Almodóvar - "The Skin I Live In" (La piel que habito), a spellbinding, genre-bending tale of a merciless plastic surgeon portrayed by none other than Antonio Banderas.

But that's not all - audiences can look forward to new releases by directors like Tom Tykwer, Ken Loach, Bent Hamer, Jerzy Skolimowski, Wim Wenders, Béla Tarr and Saverio Costanzo.

Even more fascinating titles will be featured in programme sections such as Love and Anarchy, Eastern Promises, Dangerous Kids, Focus: Quebec Screen and Late Night Show.

Slovak Season will present seven feature- and medium-length films, and Slovak Season Special will screen thirty-three shorts representing three Slovak film schools.

Art Film Fest 2011 will also include several activities and workshops focused on film and the film industry, geared towards film professionals as well as festival visitors and the wider public. June 23 and 24 will witness the first incarnation of the FORUM on the Promotion of Upcoming Slovak Films, an event aimed at supporting the promotion, co-production, festival participation and sale of Slovak films on the international market. FORUM consists of lectures by renowned international experts and a panel of upcoming Slovak feature films.

Following up its successful introduction last year, Art Film Fest will present the second edition of MIDPOINT, an international script development programme joining five European film academies - Bratislava's VŠMU, Prague's FAMU, and the film schools of Łodź, Budapest and Bucharest. In addition to MIDPOINT's events for professionals, the programme has also invited world-renowned screenwriter Jean-Claude Carrière to Trenčianske Teplice.

This year's Art Film Fest has much to offer music fans as well. On Sunday of the festival's first weekend, Trenčín's main square will get down and boogie with "Disco King" Michal David, while Trenčianske Teplice's Festival Café will feature nightly concerts moderated by versatile musician Oskar Rózsa.

Festival screenings will be held in Trenčianske Teplice at the Tatra Banka Cinema Tent, the Prameň Jojcinema and the Spa Hall, as well as in Trenčín's two Cinemax auditoriums and STV Artkino Metro.

To Whom it May Concern,

I am working with Christopher and Steve at UnionDocs, the Brooklyn, NY based nonprofit media arts organization. We are currently doing outreach to help spread the call for the next round of fellowships in our Collaborative Program, which has completed two years of successful operations, screening work at premiere venues such as MoMA's Documentary Fortnight 2010, the Harvard Film Archive, the Visible Evidence Conference 2011(upcoming), and Direktorenhaus, Berlin, among others. We expect a very competitive group of applicants, representing some of the most exciting emerging talents in documentary.

Do you know about the Collaborative? If not here's a quick description:

Through the UnionDocs Collaborative Program (UDC), now in its third year, UnionDocs builds a team of talented emerging documentary artists and guides their progress as they participate in seminars on the history and theory of nonfiction media, attend masterclasses with visiting artists, and work together to develop a final, thematically driven non-fiction media project for exhibition.

While the UDC may have many parallels to parts of a masters program, it is designed to offer an alternative, affordable approach to learning and production that focuses on collaboration and peer exchange, rather than set, teacher-led courses and inter-artist competition. The UDC does not grant degrees or certificates; instead, the completion of an excellent collaborative project is the goal.

Next year's fellows will focus on Looking at Los Sures, a three year investigation into the South Williamsburg neighborhood, which UnionDocs has been part of since 2005. This cross-platform project will create a participatory, locative map for stories and ideas piloting Zeega, an open-source HTML5 platform, being incubated by UnionDocs, metaLAB (at) Harvard, the Berkman Center for Internet and Society, and The Sensory Ethnography Lab. With this project UnionDocs revisits a lost film about the neighborhood from 1984 and creates a constellation of companion documentaries and interactive projects that annotate, challenge, update and spiral off from the original.

We will be selecting 12 artists, with an application deadline of June 24, 2011 for residents and July 22, 2011 for non-residents.

More info here: http://www.uniondocs.org

TWEET HEADLINE: Applications now open for the UnionDocs Collaborative in Brooklyn, New York, an exciting year-long program for non-fiction media research and group production!

We are always excited about Film New Europe and were wondering if you might be able to help spread the word on the applications to your network. We have created an illustrated slide show presentation that is easy to embed on blogs and websites. I can pass on the code for that, if you are interested. You can also use the paragraph or the short tweet text above, and grab this photo for newsletters, Facebook, tweets, etc.

Let us know if you need additional info. We really appreciate your help and will check in a few days to answer any questions. Thanks and I look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,
Marcia

Last chance to submit your film for the 5th Kaunas International Film Festival

Kaunas International Film Festival calls filmmakers to submit their films for this year's programme. Films fitting into one of the programme sections - "Identity", "All the Muses", "Music Moves the World" and the short film programme - have to be submitted by June 24.

In order to participate in the festival, the applicants have to register and fill in the application form in the visitor page of the Kaunas IFF's website, provided by festival partner "Eventival". A DVD copy of the film has to be shipped to the Festival by the specified deadline - June 24.

"In the 5th edition of Kaunas Film Festival, talents, distributors and production companies from all over the world can submit their films to the Festival. The films will be reviewed by KIFF programme team and will get an opportunity to be included in the official selection of KIFF," says Tomas Tengmark, Kaunas Film Festival programme producer. "I see this as an opportunity for new discoveries and hope that interesting films will find their way to Kaunas. Read the full film submission guidelines on the KIFF website and submit your films!"

The Festival viewers' favourite section "Identities" includes films with a special view of identity. These motion pictures look into relevant issues of international and intercultural differences and similarities. Characters of these films face the challenges of migration as well as cultural dilemmas in countries or communities of destination; they experience growth and development, they get old, they change and reflect upon these changes. Through fundamental psychological and sociological transformation, individuals and communities aim to perceive their identities. Cinema has the capacity to sensitively reveal the aspects of identity.

The section "Music Moves the World", dedicated to the fans of music and film, introduces unique portraits of solo artists and bands, concert films, and documentaries about the culture of music.

The section "All the Muses" is reserved for films about art. Themes and genres vary within this programme section, but all films speak about the subtlety of the phenomenon of creativity and exceptional artist personalities. The films contemplate the issues of the purpose of art, and the relationship of art with other cultural phenomena.

This year's Festival also presents the short film programme. Like every year, no genre restrictions apply - fiction films, documentaries as well as animation and experimental films are welcome. However, special attention will be given to films using long takes. Those can be films that meet the criteria of a long take and a deeper look both in terms of the form and the content.

The organisers of the Festival are waiting for the films that fit into the abovementioned sections and remind the filmmakers that they should submit applications via the special online form provided by festival partner "Eventival" that can be found on the visitors page of the Festival's website and to ensure that the submitted films meet the specified quality and legal requirements.

The KIFF's visitors page for the registration of film applications: http://vp.eventival.eu/kaunas/2011 .
