The Malta Film Commission has distributed over 1.54 m EUR for 19 projects within the Creative Malta scheme, of which nine are production grants.

BUDAPEST: A biopic of the legendary Maria Callas is set to start shooting in Hungary in October 2023, directed by Chilean director Pablo Larraín and starring Angelina Jolie. Budapest will stand-in for Paris.

BUCHAREST: London-based sales agent Reason8 Films has picked up Tudor Giurgiu’s new feature film as a director, Libertate, ahead of its screenings in the Competition Programme – Feature Film of the 29th Sarajevo Film Festival (11 – 18 August 2023). The film is a Romanian/Hungarian coproduction between Giurgiu’s Libra Film Productions and Mythberg Films.

Just one week left to submit to RIGA IFF FORUM – the deadline is 15 August! Submissions are open for both programmes – SHORT RIGA Test Screenings – a session where short films can get in-depth, professional feedback and RIGA IFF SHOWCASE – a pitching session for feature film and series projects. The festival’s annual industry section will take place from 19 to 21 October.

SARAJEVO: Eight creative documentary projects in postproduction from Central and Eastern Europe will be presented in Docu Talents from the East@Sarajevo Film Festival Festival within the Sarajevo FF’s CineLink Industry Days on 13 August 2023.

BERLIN: Film professionals interested in gaining a full perspective of running an arthouse cinema can apply to the 20th edition of CICAE’s annual Arthouse Cinema Training (ACT), which will be held in Berlin 30 October – 5 November 2023. The deadline for applications is 27 August 2023.

On August 4, 2023, the Board of the Slovak Audiovisual Fund, as based on the findings of the Supervisory Commitee of SAF, removed me from the position of the Fund’s Director for allegedly violating the law. I disagree with the findings of the Supervisory Commitee and consider them to be insufficiently substantied and flawed. In my opinion, the inspection was conducted in a purposive manner related to the wording of the particular complaint received, and I am considering further legal action.

Peter Badač, the director of the Slovak Audiovisual Fund, was on 4 August 2023 dismissed by the board of the Audiovisual Fund after six months in office due to repeated violations of the Fund's law and serious breaches of ethical rules in communication with the Fund's employees.
