21th February 2020, Berlin: The EUROPEAN SHOOTING STARS 2020 – selected among outstanding up-and-coming talent from across Europe – have arrived in Berlin today to start their busy tailor-made schedules of profile-raising events, including industry panels and meetings with casting directors, agents, producers and other important players in the industry. Presented during the Berlin International Film Festival, the 23rd edition of EUROPEAN SHOOTING STARS culminates with the Awards Ceremony on Monday 24 February, providing the actors and actresses with their red-carpet Berlinale moment.

EUROPEAN SHOOTING STARS is considered an important stepping stone towards an international career – most notable actors of recent years include: Carey Mulligan (Promising Young Woman, The Great Gatsby), Alba Rohrwacher (Happy as Lazzaro), Oscar-winner Alicia Vikander (Tomb Raider), Pilou Asbaek (Game of Thrones), Riz Ahmed (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Mogul Mowgli, Berlinale2020), and George MacKay (1917). EFP’s talent platform is financially supported by the Creative Europe – MEDIA Programme of the European Union and the respective national film institutes, EFP’s member organisations as well as our loyal partners.

The 2020 European Shooting Stars are supported by their national film institutes: Bulgarian National Film Center, Danish Film Institute, Estonian Film Institute, Georgian National Film Center, German Films, Instituto do Cinema e do Audiovisual I.P. / ICA (Portugal), Polish Film Institute, SEE NL (The Netherlands), SWISS FILMS and UniFrance.

The EUROPEAN SHOOTING STARS press presentation – a hosted Q&A, followed by individual interview opportunities – will take place on Saturday, Feb. 22 at the Audi Berlinale Lounge.

Berlin, 24 February 2020: Tonight the EUROPEAN SHOOTING STARS 2020 were welcomed to the Berlinale Palast stage by host, Alexander Fehling – German Shooting Stars in 2011 – and presented with the EUROPEAN SHOOTING STARS Award. The prominent talent programme, which is celebrating its 23rd edition, is financially supported by the Creative Europe – MEDIA Programme of the European Union and the participating national film institutes, EFP‘s member organisations and the German and Chinese Culture Foundation.

EFP (European Film Promotion) and its supporters are delighted to once again bring the EUROPEAN SHOOTING STARS programme to Berlin International Film Festival. Tonight's ceremony was held in the presence of Festival Directors Mariette Rissenbeek and Carlo Chatrian as well as Monika Grütters, German Minister of the State for Culture and the Media and a number of Europe's cultural ministers.

BRATISLAVA: Twenty films will compete in the Heart of Europe – Competition of Short Films at the 27th edition of Febiofest, taking place 11 – 17 March 2020 in Bratislava, including the Czech animated short film Daughter by Daria Kashcheeva, which was nominated for an Oscar.

TALLINN: How Big is the Galaxy by Ksenia Elyan, a Russian/Estonian coproduction, won the EFCA Doc Award 2020, presented by the European Children’s Film Association.

The European Children’s Film Association (ECFA), Europe’s leading children’s film organisation, has announced that their annual ECFA Award for Best European Children’s Film has been won by Binti by director Frederike Migom (Belgium). This film tells the story of a young girl who claims her right to live a normal life and dream her own dreams, even if she doesn’t have the legal documents to prove that she really exists.

As some of our team members are getting ready to attend the European Film Market to prepare for the year ahead, we are glad to announce that we'll be opening our film submission on the 1st of March.

This year, some things will be different, however, as Black Nights, in league with other festivals feels that festivals need to do more in the context of the looming climate crisis. A festivals' Green Pledge in the works, but as a first step we announce that for every official film submission we receive this year, one euro will be donated to the reforestation of Australia's areas that were destroyed in the devastating bushfires.

On Tuesday, February 4, Japanese Ambassador Hajme Kitaoka's residence was handed over to the Japanese Foreign Minister for the Black Nights Film Festival and Japan's Asashio.

Black Nights Film Festival was honored by the Japanese Embassador in Estonia, mr Hajime Kitaoka, who presented a letter of appreciation on behalf of the Foreign Minister of Japan.
Black Nights has screened over a hundred Japanese films and made several thematic focus programmes of Japanese cinema.

The founder and director or Black Nights, mrs Tiina Lokk will receive the annual national culture prize from the government of Estonia for the success of the 23rd edition of Black Nights as we broke several records.
It is noteworthy that four out of the five prizes went to people working in the film industry.

EUROPEAN GENRE FORUM KICKS OFF

European Genre Forum has opened submissions! EGF is a pan-european training programme organised by Black Nights, Imagine FF from Amsterdam and Fantastic Zagreb FF.  Its aim is to boost the genre film industry through two talent labs, packed with trainings, panels mentoring and pitching sessions. 
The Producing Lab takes place in Zagreb during Fantastic Zagreb in July. The Marketing & Packaging Lab takes place in Tallinn during PÖFF, in the final week of November.

PRAGUE: The Czech Film Fund announced that almost 80 films and series were shot in the Czech Republic in 2019, thanks to film incentives. Implementation of the projects brought revenues of 8.9 billion CZK / 363 m EUR to the Czech economy.
