BUDAPEST: The initiative of the National Film Institute – Hungary (NFI) to annually celebrate the day of 30 April, when the first film with dramatised scenes, A Táncz by Béla Zsitkovszky, was presented in 1901, is met in 2023 with numerous events in cinemas and also on TV and streaming platforms.

VIENNA: The International Screen Institute (ISI) has recently opened applications for its new training programmes for European and international film and TV creatives and executives in 2023. The four courses are: Sustainability Management (in June), Business & Legal Affairs (in September), The Audience Design Lab (in October) and Market Ready (later this year).

BUCHAREST: Beta Cinema has acquired Golden Bear-winner Călin Peter Netzer’s upcoming feature Familiar, which is a Romanian/French/Taiwanese coproduction currently in postproduction. Pre-sales will start at the upcoming Marché du Film (16 – 24 May 2023) in Cannes.

Prague / Cannes - The Cannes Film Festival has revealed the next part of the Official selection. The competition section La Cinef (formerly La Cinéfondation) will screen the highly anticipated film Electra by Daria Kashcheeva, produced by Zuzana Křivková and Martin Vandas from Czech MAUR film and co-produced with FAMU, Artichoke (Slovakia) and Papy3D (France).

BUCHAREST: The Romanian/Bulgarian coproduction Men of Deeds / Oameni de treabă by Paul Negoescu received the Best Long Film Award at the 17th edition of the Gopo Awards held at the “I.L. CARAGIALE” National Theatre in Bucharest on 25 April 2023. The film also won in the director, actor, supporting actor, script and editing categories.

KARLOVY VARY: The digitally restored film Courage for Every Day (1964) by Evald Schorm, a key work of the Czechoslovak New Wave, will have its world premiere at the 57th edition of the Karlovy Vary IFF, set to take place 30 June – 8 July 2023.

PODGORICA: The Film Centre of Montenegro has allotted 19,975 EUR for the production of the animation project Fable of the Chicken by Milo Bešović, which has a solid potential for international success in the Centre's opinion.

TALLINN: Shanghai-based Studio Supreme has opened its new European branch, in Estonia. Studio Supreme Films will provide a full range of video production services, from ideation to postproduction, for both commercial and fictional projects.
