TALLINN: The Days that Confused by Triin Ruumet was awarded best feature film at the first edition of Estonia’s National Film and Television Awards on 12 March 2017. The Land of Love by Liivo Niglas was awarded best documentary. Several specialised film and TV prizes have been launched in Estonia over the years, but the country has lacked a unified annual prize until now.

TALLINN: The Estonian Film Institute distributed 939,000 EUR as feature films productions grants to six projects.

TALLINN: Estonia will launch its first joint National Film and Television Awards on 12 March 2017. A total of 24 categories will be presented, including 12 for film.

Estonian cinema had an outstanding year in 2016, with several records broken. Total admissions reached an all-time high of 3.29 m, a six percentage point increase from 2015. Another record is 2.4 admissions per capita. Total box office reached a record of 17.6 m EUR, with 12 percentage points more than in 2015.

TALLINN: International cinema giant AMC Theatres will acquire the Sweden-based cinema network Nordic Cinema Group for a reported 870 m EUR. Estonia’s cinema chain Forum Cinemas will be part of the deal.

TALLINN: DIGIX is the Baltic States’ first creative industries incubator for startups working with the elusive and fast developing field of digital media. Set up in 2015, DIGIX is located on the premises of the Baltic Film and Media School, staying close to upcoming talent in the audiovisual, media, games and e-learning fields.

TALLINN: A cluster of Estonian film production companies united into the joint company Tallinn Film Wonderland, is planning to build the Baltics’ largest film production hub in Tallinn by the end of 2018. The complex will be situated in a formerly industrial area close to the centre of Tallinn on the land owned by Sonny Aswani, a business magnate from Singapore with decades-long business experience in Estonia.

TALLINN: Estonia has concluded two funding contracts with a total spend of 443,000 EUR through the new cash rebate system FilmEstonia launched at the beginning of 2016. The pilot year budget of 500,000 EUR is expected to grow up to 1 m EUR in 2017.

TALLINN: The Spy and the Poet / Luuraja ja Luuletaja by Toomas Hussar will be released domestically on almost 40 screens on 23 September 2016, a large opening by Estonian standards. Oscar-nominated Ivo Felt from Allfilm is the producer.
