2020 is a crucial year for many film festivals. Because of the Covid 19 pandemic and government restrictions all over the world, film festivals have been cancelled, postponed or had to move completely online or be hybrid. What will the year 2021 bring to the festival organizers and to festival audiences? How had the Covid 19 pandemic influenced programming at film festivals? Is it more difficult to find new and great films if the festival is only online or hybrid? Is it easier to reach new audiences? What about the whole festival atmosphere, how can it be reproduced when everybody is watching films at home and not together in the cinema? What festivals should you submit your new film to? These will be some of the topics discussed by our guests.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

The decision of the Polish government to limit cultural activities due to the growing number of COVID-19 cases in the country is not only justified, but even necessary. Events where a larger number of viewers meet may become the cause of the dynamic spread of the virus. The decision has filled us with pain, but also understanding. At the same time, we appeal to all creators of culture to find strength and survive the necessary restrictions. Only in this way can we prevent the suffering and death of many people.

We hoped and prepared everything necessary for the EnergaCAMERIMAGE Festival to be held stationary. Despite the pandemic, many outstanding artists confirmed their readiness to come to Toruń for EnergaCAMERIMAGE already last month. We expected Philippe Rousselot, Viggo Mortensen, Johnny Depp, Julian Sands, and Vittorio Storaro. We also invited Ridley Scott, David Lynch, Volker Schlöndorff, Roman Polański, Jerzy Skolimowski, Carlos Saura, Tom Cruise, Kate Winslet, Keanu Reeves, Woody Allen, Agnieszka Holland, Małgorzata Szumowska, Lech Majewski, RZA and many, many others. We expected the arrival of about a thousand cinematographers and film school students from around the world, many representatives of companies producing film equipment and technologies, and fans of the 10th Muse.

The 24th edition of the annual Ji.hlava IDFF closed its doors. This year, the festival was  unique in that it was held online and attracted more audience than in the previous  editions. The festival programme presented 310 films and over 80 discussions with  filmmakers. 5933 accreditations were issued for visitors, guests and journalists. The total  views of festival films exceeded 56 thousand. “Assuming that in one third of the cases  the films were viewed by two people, we have reached almost 75,000 viewers. And in  reality, the figures can be even much higher,” says Marek Hovorka, the Festival Director.  The festival website registered over 1,300,000 visits during the festival days. Ji.hlava  online offered 6 all-day live streams from the Ji.hlava Lighthouse and 20 live discussions  of the Inspiration Forum. The online festival took place in partnership with DAFilms.cz – a VOD platform founded 15 years ago by the Ji.hlava IDFF.
