POLISH CLASSICS

In this year’s "Polish classics" section we’ve included titles belonging to different eras, different sensitivities, but above all else – realized by completely different, extraordinary filmmakers. On the big screen we’ll be able to observe moving, timeless roles, fascinating stories which quite rarely appear on the big screen these days. Such an opportunity doesn't happen often.

PRAGUE: The Oscar-winning director Jiří Menzel died on 5 September 2020 in Prague, following a long illness. He was 82 years old.

It's halfime at the Venice Production Bridge (VPB), organised by La Biennale di Venezia, during the 77. Venice International Film Festival. The event is being held on site at the Excelsior Hotel and online. Over the past four days it has hosted numerous international panels and the one-to-one meetings of the Venice Gap-Financing Market and the Book Adaptation Rights Market. As this part of the VPB is wrapping up, further important panels will take place over the coming days and the workshop of Final Cut in Venice will commence tomorrow.

As the first major Industry event to take place since the lockdown, the Venice Production Bridge is giving space to the film community to come together, to take stock and to find ways on how to move forward. It also demonstrates how film markets can be organised, under the current circumstances, respecting all of the sanitary measures, allowing for in-person attendance and actual face-to-face meetings, while also existing virtually for the wider film industry still unable to travel.

One the VPB Live Channel you will be able to follow the upcoming panels and presentations. Those that have taken place over the past few days are now becoming available to watch again.

VENICE: Boglarka Nagy, head of studies of the CICAE Training, and CICAE trainer Javier Pachón discuss the latest edition of CICAE training for arthouse and independent exhibitors, that just wrapped on the island of San Servolo in Venice (31 August-6 September 2020). They share with us how they organised one of the first on site events in the cinema industry to take place since the pandemic and the challenges of combining on site and online training and the importance of people meeting and networking even in these difficult times.

KALISZ: The shooting is underway for Wolka, a new crime drama from Árni Ólafur Ásgeirsson, coproduced by Iceland and Poland. The crew moved from Westman Islands to Kalisz, Poland, on 5 September 2020.

BUDAPEST: The first episode of the five-episode film The Quarantine Zone directed by Dániel Indi Zsótér began filming on 7 September 2020. The low-budget film, which is independently produced by the creative team, has also launched a fund-raising campaign to collect 1,665 EUR by 28 September.

BRNO: The 46th EKOFILM International Film Festival, which will take place in Brno from 14 to 17 October 2020, will open with a performance by the musician Kapitán Demo and close with the Oscar-nominated non-competition Macedonian film Honeyland by Tamara Kotevska and Ljubo Stefanov (produced by Atanas Georgiev and Ljubo Stefanov through Trice Films and Apollo Media).
