JIHLAVA: The 26th edition of the Ji.hlava International Documentary Film Festival has opened admissions for feature-length and short films, animated and interactive documentaries. The call for the eleventh edition of the Emerging Producers programme, which will take place 24–28 October 2022 (Jihlava) and in February 2023 (Berlin), is also open for applications.

The films premiered in Jihlava have a chance to be nominated for the European Film Academy Awards and the winners at the Ji.hlava IDFF are also eligible for Oscar® consideration in the Documentary Short Subject and Documentary Feature Subject categories. WARSAW: Principal photography for Sebastian Buttny's Polish/Hungarian film Saint / Święty wrapped on 11 February 2022. The film has been shot for thirty days in Poznań and Gniezno.

BUCHAREST: Christopher Landry’s Document 56 has wrapped production in Romania. The Romanian/USA feature short tells the strange-but-true story of a covert Cold War alliance between the American CIA and the Romanian Securitate (secret police) to finance the Iraqi regime of Saddam Hussein.

LOS ANGELES: Polish film The Dress by Tadeusz Łysiak was nominated for the Academy Awards in the Short Film (Live Action) category. Hungarian set decorator Zsuzsanna Sipos received a nomination in the Production design category, together with the Canadian production designer Patrice Vermette, for Dune by Denis Villeneuve. Polish DoPJanusz Kamiński got a nod for Best Cinematography in West Side Story.

BRUSSELS: Initial estimates of the International Union of Cinemas (UNIC) for 2021 show the return of audiences and recovery of cinemas across Europe, with an estimated 3.7 blillion EUR in BO, an increase of 42% compared to 2020.

Brussels: 7 February 2022 - The International Union of Cinemas (UNIC), the body representing European cinema trade associations and operators, has today released preliminary 2021 box office and admissions estimates for the territories covered by the organisation.

FNE spoke with Alexander Gabelia, a Georgian film critic and cultural researcher, about the challenges and problems of Georgian film criticism, as well as the activities and tasks of the Georgian cinema platform CinExpress. Alexander is one of the editors and authors of CinExpress, an association of film researchers, that has recently published an electronic cinema magazine, already available to a mass audience free of charge, with the financial support of the GNFC.
