2011 Best Czech Documentary Film

The jury recognized the film Solar Eclipse (Czech Republic, 2011) by Martin Mareček for "its surprising and impressive capturing of the Czech development help to Zambian people".

FilmAFRICA follows two Central Europeans on an adventure to Zambia to repair village‘s solar panels. They are aware of the value of their work, whose purpose they see in helping the villagers - these, however, are not satisfied with their lives. Black and white mindsets subtly, humorously, and touchingly collide.

The jury also gave a special mention to the film 31 Beginnings / 31 Endings (Czech Republic, 2011) by Rafani for "the innovative approach to the documentary film".

FilmCOLLECTIVE was realized by the Rafani art group known for their diverse works including photography, video and public event. The film treatise has the structure of a city, following the direction from the periphery to the centre, which is perceived as the centre of power, hegemony and normativity. Each part of the city/film introduces a representative of Czech art or Czech thinking.

James T. Hong as the single jury of this section chose the film Lost Land (Territoire perdu, Belgium, 2011) by Pierre-Yves Vandeweerd.

FilmSAND, with its rough 8mm texture, exists on the boundary between art-house meditation, philosophical-ethical reflection, and social documentary listening to the people of the Western Sahara, whose difficult life on this contested piece of Africa, partially ruled by Morocco and partially controlled by rebels, is marked by struggle, kidnapping, and refugee camps.

Juror commented on his decision: "Lost Land's simple cinematic gestures express a fleeting beauty infused with a knowing sadness - that questions our own ignorance of the Sahrawi situation. Its political resistance isn't overtly propagandized, but rather modestly presented as a lost series of profoundly beautiful images and scenes, which lead the viewer closer and closer to an almost imaginary but all-too-physical wall. To me, Lost Land is an urgent, aestheticized work of mourning - a lost memory of a lost people in a lost landscape filmed in a lost format."

2011 Best Central and Eastern European Documentary Film

The jury of the Between the Seas section awarded the film Bakhmaro (Bakhmaro, Georgia, 2011) by Salome Jashi for its respect, artistry and quest for surprise.

FilmAPATHY uses a restaurant in the western Georgian town of Chokhatauri to symbolize the decline of the southern Caucasus and the people's weariness from economic failure and political ills. The owners are patient, but there are few guests. Election posters and TV ads promise a better life, but it looks like nothing can change.

The jurors commented that "with an attentive and personal approach the filmmaker transforms an ordinary microcosm into a unique narrative and playful visual experience. Through an effective and assured cinematic language this film reveals the mood and the spirit of a society struggling with its internal hopes and contradictions."

Film New Europe Visegrad Prix 2011

For its rhapsodic effort to expand the responsibilities of filmmaking the award for Best Central & Eastern Co-production goes to Obscurantist and His Lineage or the Pyramids' Tearful Valleys (Tmář a jeho rod aneb Slzavé údolí pyramid, Czech Republic, 2011) by Karel Vachek.

FilmNOVEL about extraterrestrial civilization living not only in space but also on Earth. The film by the classic of Czech documentary opens by quotations from the famous operetta Mam'zelle Nitouche which is confronted with environment of a convent, theatre, and barracks. The director, too, enters these to discover and define the thin border between internal faith in God and institutionalized religion.

2011 Best Experimental Documentary Film

The jury recognized the film Endeavour (Endeavour, Austria, 2010) by Johann Lurf.

FilmCOSMOS playfully and ingeniously edits NASA footage in order to take a look at America's last space shuttle. \hallucinatory images of daytime and nighttime launches and flights become a brutal attack on the viewer's attention and perception, thus giving audiences a chance to study the universe of their visual perceptions.

"We were most fascinated by the film Endeavour which regularly combines the scenes from six cameras placed in a space shuttle. The resulting film is similar to the functioning of the human brain which also interconnects the functioning of the left and right hemisphere into a single whole. Although the film was made by a machine and shows primarily the machine, it is most telling of mankind as such. At the beginning, the spectator watches the camera images, however, the regular rhythm of image and sound provides space for reflection," said the jury about their decision.

CONTRIBUTION TO WORLD CINEMA AWARD

The Contribution to World Cinema Award went to Vittorio de Seta, one of the Italian cinema's great imaginative realists of the sixties.

THE INDUSTRY PROGRAMME IN JIHLAVA ORGANIZED BY INSTITUTE OF DOCUMENTARY FILM

The awards to the documentaries presented in Jihlava by the Institute of Documentary Film were announced at the festival closing ceremony.

Silver Eye Award for the best documentary from Central and Eastern Europe finished in 2010 or 2011 was obtained by three out of 250 films from East Silver Market.

The winners are: the feature-length Solar Eclipse (Pod sluncem tma), Martin Mareček, Czech Republic 2011, the mid-length Crulic - the Path to Beyond (Crulic - Drumul spre dincolo), Anca Damian, Rumania, Poland 2011 and the short documentary I Will Forget This Day (Ya zabudu etot den), Alina Rudnitskaya, Russia 2011. All three of them are getting 1 500 Euro and the East Silver Caravan festival service - an assistance with the submission to prestigious documentary festivals and markets throughout the year.

Awards also go to unfinished documentaries. The IDFA Award and the submission to the Amsterdam pitching in November goes to Croatian - Rumanian project Gangster of Love. "It's real surprise. We didn't succeed ourselves getting to Amsterdam. And now we will be there anyway," said the director Nebojša Slijepčevič.

Golden Funnel Award for the best-developing project goes to Bells of Happiness from Marek Šulík and Jana Bučka, Slovak Republic. It's a story from a poor Roma settlement in Eastern Slovakia. Pregnant Mariena and her cousin remake a famous song from Czechoslovak pop stars Karel Gott and Dara Rolins. The two filmmakers will get a special service from the Institute of Documentary Film throughout the year.

The juries for the 15th Black Nights Film Festival promise to bring debate and intensity to their careful scrutiny of competition films as they head to Tallinn, Estonia between 16th and 30th October 2011. Jury members include Sergei Loznitsa, the director of the hugely praised My Joy which won the Grand Prix at PÖFF 2010, and Oscar nominated filmmaker Juanita Wilson

The International Competition EurAsia Jury will award a Grand Prix and jury prizes for Best Director, Actor and Actress from a diverse and excellent selection of films from Europe and Asia., Sergei Loznitsa (Russia) - who has directed 11 documentaries and seen his feature debut “My Joy” premiered in the main competition at the Festival de Cannes and Juanita Wilson (Ireland) - whose first short film “The Door” was nominated for an Academy Award in 2010 and who has recently been named among Variety’s top ten directors to watch for in 2011 – will both be amongst those deciding on the Grand Prix winner. They will be joined by Karen Young (USA)– an actress who has appeared in over two dozen films and is a regular on the New York stage, appearing last year in actor/director Ethan Hawke's revival of Sam Shepard's “A Lie of the Mind”- and Peter Zeitlinger (Austria) who has been working with Werner Herzog since 1995 when he was the director of photography on Herzog's documentary Death For Five Voices. This has led to an intensive collaboration on films such as Grizzly Man, Encounters at the End of the World and Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans. The jury will be rounded off by Indu Shrikent (India), the festival director of Osian’s- Cinefan Film Festival of Asian and Arab Cinema, and a member of FIPRESCI and Peeter Urbla (Estonia), a producer, director and screenwriter whose most famous films are Ma pole turist, ma elan siin, Agent Sinikael”, Lilja 4-ever and Stiilipidu.

The Tridens Baltic Feature Film Competition will concentrate on the best films emanating from Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. Here the jury will consist of Dita Rietuma (Latvia), a member and founder of the FIPRESCI in Latvia, expert at the Cultural Foundation of Latvia and the Ministry of Culture and lecturer at Latvian University and the founder of film school Kinoskola; Xavier Garcia Puerto (Spain), the co-founder and Art Director of REC International Film Festival of Tarragona and Laufey Gudjónsdóttir (Iceland), currently a board member of Einar Jonsson's Museum, MEDIA in Iceland, International Women's Film Festival in Iceland, Icelandic Literature Fund and Nordisk Film & TV Fond.

The North American Independent Film Competition jury will consist of Gabor Greiner (Germany) a former acquisitions executive at international sales agent The Match Factory who now works at French-German sales company Films Boutique, Youngjoo SUH (South Korea) the founder of, Cineclick Asia in 2000 and producer of such films as Kim Ki-Duk’s 3 Iron and Peeter Rebane (Estonia) and entrepreneur, producer and film director. They will attempt to find North American films that have the best potential for distribution.

Other juries are the Network for the Promotion of Asian Cinema (NETPAC) which will consist of Marjan Riahi (Iran), a member of various film and journalism organizations and the founder and manager of Short Film News the first news network on short films and documentaries in Iran and Asia, Brian Bennet (Thailand), the festival director of Bangkok’s largest short film festival 9FilmFest and Joonas Kiik (Estonia), a film aficionado who regularly writes about films on the Internet and in various Estonian newspapers and magazines from Eesti Ekspress to Kinoleht; the International Federation of Film Clubs which will be represented by Emelie Sundberg (Sweden), Bijan Sen Sarma (India) and Birgit Pajust (Estonia) and the International Federation of Film Critics (FIPRESCI) which will be made up of by respected film critics Donald Tomberg (Estonia), Pamela Pianezza (France) and Katja Čičigoj (Slovenia)

The director of the Black Nights Film Festival Tiina Lokk said:

An international off competition program open to sci-fi, fantasy, horror, extreme action or simply fantastic out-of-the-box films to open your mind and dare you to dream!
Maximum duration of submitted films: 60 minutes.
The films must be completed after January 1st 2010.

NexT Dance
From good ol' school musicals to hot pop, from street dance & hip hop to classical ballet & contemporary choreography, we welcome international narrative short films that spice up their story with a splash of music & dance, for a very special night at NexT 2012. Our goal: a 2-hour off competition program to electrify our audience and make them go home humming and swinging.
Maximum duration of submitted films: 60 minutes.
The films must be completed after January 1st 2010.

NexT Kids
A special program for the youngest hearts at NexT 2012, designed to make them experience smart and fascinating short films: an opportunity for 5 to 12 year olds to discover cinema through creative animations and live action short films from all around the world. The screenings will be followed by hands-on special activities related to the films in the program.
Maximum duration: 10 minutes.
For this section only, there is no time limit regarding the completion date of the films.

Gotham in Progress is the first industry event devoted solely to US indie films in Europe. GIP provides a European industry showcase for US indies in final production stages. Out of the 11 projects, selected from 39 applications, 7 will be presented in full at closed industry screenings.

Among these films are Atlantic Pictures' new project, GRAND STREET by Lex Sidon, STONES IN THE SUN by Patricia Benoit (Selected for the 2007 Sundance Screenwriters & Directors Lab and Winner of the Time Warner Storytelling Award) from the producer of CIRCUMSTANCE, Karin Chien, and WHEN THE WORLD'S ON FIRE by James Clauer (short "The Aluminum Fowl" was in Directors Fortnight in Cannes) produced by John Maringouin (BIG RIVER MAN). Furthermore, four other projects will be promoted and presented as 30 minute-long trailers.

The films will benefit from a special gathering of 30 European distributors, sales agents, producers and fest programmers to consider investing finishing funds as well as their customary services. Some of the buyers that confirmed their presence at the event are: HanWay. Memento, LevelK, Artificial Eye, the Works, Soda Pictures, Imagine Film, Bankside Films, Reel Suspects and Haut et Court. Programmers from a few key festivals are also expected at GiP.

A jury of industry professionals will chose one film of the 7 to be awarded a post-production package consisting of a digital master (DCP) and subtitling and post services, provided by AFF sponsors, XDC and Studio L'Equipe, respectively. In addition, sound and graphics for opening and closing credits donated by Mactari France and Poland's Alvernia Studios. Total post services value is $60,000.

Gotham in Progress is an initiative of New York and Paris-based Black Rabbit Films and New Horizons Association. The latter produces Poland's largest annual international film fest, New Horizons IFF as well as its little sister event, the American Film Festival.

The second edition of American Film Festival unspools November 15-20. The only ongoing Polish film event focused on American cinema will offer narrative and documentary competition sections with Audience Awards of $10,000 and $5,000 respectively. Retrospectives of Todd Solondz, Terrence Malick and Joe Swanberg will also take place during the event.

‘2011 will be remembered as the year of the turning point in the history of the festival: it became visible in the map of the great European film festivals’ says the article of László Valuska on index.hu, Hungary's leading and most popular online magazine. The 8th Miskolc International Film Festival received the unified appreciation of the Hungarian critics.

‘Great festival, little money, and all the other clichés… Jameson CineFest is not all about that but about dedicated people who are pro in bringing out the maximum from the minimum’ says Linda Katona, critic of filmtett.ro, in her article with the title ‘The Human Festival’. And she goes on like this: ‘Screening the 70-year-old People on the Alps (Emberek a havason) on a festival is an image determing program. István Szőts would be 100 next year and talking about him is the celebration of the Hungarian film… Jameson CineFest is proud to do so, either for the profession or the audience… Drastic films, intense competition, lessons to be learnt, and all in human voice: this Miskolc vacation in the autumn sunshine was a real theme park of films, and no one could desire more – but same time, next year, here again!’ In his article in the leading daily Népszabadság, Gyula Varsányi wrote that ‘Miskolc has been an oasis in the desert of Hungarian films’, and that the competition program was ‘special, balancing on the border of art and genre films.’ Gyögy Báron wrote in the weekly Élet és Irodalom that ‘Jameson CineFest, the Miskolc muster of young filmmakers’ productions is not only existing and surviving but also keeping the high level by which it managed to emerge from the field of the Hungarian festivals in the last few years… The whole competition program reflected the sophisticated taste and the mastery of international films.’

‘By today, CineFest has indisputably become the best Hungarian international film festival. The work of the last eight years could be harvested in this year’s September’ wrote László Kolozsi in Revizor, the critical portal of the Hungarian National Cultural Fund (NKA). ‘Who was there could believe that they live in a country and be hosted by a city where culture is important. And for the time being, no festival could aspire for more.’

AWARDS
IDF Industry Programme features annual Silver Eye Awards, handed out tothe best short, mid-length and feature documentaries, along with the two awardsfor docs-in-progress – Golden Funnel Award and IDF Forum Award.The best Czech documentary project will be awarded with HBO Award at theopening ceremony of the IDFF Jihlava. HBO grants up to 1 200 000 CZKsupport for a documentary film production costs. The HBO call is a mutualproject with the Institute of Documentary Film/East Silver.

100 FILMS COMPLETED WITH DIRECT SUPPORT FROM IDF
Over the eleven years of IDF'sexistence, more than 100 documentary films have been completed with the aid ofthe East European Forum, Ex Oriente Film, and Doc Launch.Many of the films have been awarded at major international festivals, such asthe Cannes IFF, Locarno IFF, Hot Docs, IDFA, Visions du réel, andBerlinale. The East Silver Market has facilitated festival orbroadcasting support for over 500 completed films.

The 11th Industry Programme is the the region's largest meeting place for East European documentaryfilmmakers and Europe'sand North America'sleading commissioning editors, distributors, buyers, sales agents, festival programmers, and film fundrepresentatives. More than 100 East European directors and producers are looking to find support fortheir documentary projects and completed films. Organized as part ofthe Industry Programme for the eleventh time, the East European Forum is the region'slargest meeting of East European documentary filmmakers and Europeancommissioning editors, distributors, sales agents, and film fundrepresentatives. Filmmakers and independent producers attend the event tooffer their projects for co-production, presale and other forms of financialsupport. Over the years, the East European Forum has become aprestigious platform that has since 2001 hosted several hundred East Europeanfilmmakers and producers, around a hundred commissioning editors, and tens ofinternational distributors, sales agents and festival programmers.

The stories and topicsof projects at this year's East European Forum are as varied as their styles. Hereare just some of them: Ivo Bystřičan's documentary essay Under (the)Construction captures the clash between a constructionengineer and an environmental activist over a highway planned at a Czech naturereserve. In Show!, Bohdan Bláhovec follows girls who areturned into pop stars, and unmasks the workings of the Czech show business. JanGogola will pitch Village City that documents an elaborate art projectput together by Czech artist Kateřina Šedá. Velvet Terrorists by Slovak filmmakerPeter Kerekes brings to light several cases of small-time domestic terrorism informer Czechoslovakia. In Belarusian Toys, young Lithunian filmmakerLina Luzyte travels to Zhlobin, Belarus, to retrieve a sad picture of animpoverished town once thriving on plush toys. Nebojša Slijepčević from Croatiawill present Gangster of Love, a documentary comedy about a matchmakerfor lonely men in remote parts of Croatia. Israeli filmmaker Itamar Rose opensup a sensitive subject in My Village - the 1948 expulsion ofPalestinians from territories occupied by Israel. Baltoro Pasage byPolish filmmaker Eliza Kubarska follows a group of young people as theyundertake a perilous journey through the Karakoram to visit the place wheretheir parents died years ago. For over a year, Grzegorz Pacek was involved withthe project Ewa, tracing the steps of the human rights activist EwaJasiewicz who was part of the humanitarian convoy to Gaza targeted by Israel inMay 2010. Tatyana Soboleva's Russian-French project Heralds from the BigWorld joins a floating hospital that navigates Siberia to reach patients inisolated areas. Diana's List by Croatian director Dana Budisavljevićrecounts the story of a remarkable woman who took care of some 12 thousandchildren during WWII. Daniel Begun's Good Night, White Pride focuses onvarious antifascist groups and their followersincontemporary Russia. An uncommon reunion is thesubject of Željko Mirković's The Second Meeting- eleven years after a Serbian officer shot down an F-117A with a U.S. pilot.Other projects: Jail Team (dir.Genka Shikerova, Petko Gyulchev, Bulgaria); Far Encounters (dir. The 8th East Silver Market is coming to Jihlavato offer its slate of new documentary films from Central and Eastern Europe.Industry professionals - commissioning editors, sales agents, distributors, andfestival programmers - will be able to browsethe market's digitized video library of 249 documentary films, along with some 100 films from the festival programme, made in2010/2011.

The SilverEye Awards recognize the best documentary films included in the EastSilver Market. The Silver Eye Awards are presented in three categories -short, mid-length, and feature documentary film - and the winners are decidedby international juries made up of our industry guests:

The winner in each category will receive EUR1,500 and yearlong festival service from East Silver. The Silver Eye Award winners will be announced October 29, 2011 at theClosing Ceremony of the 15th Jihlava International Documentary Film Festival.

Two Czech documentaries are in the running forthe Silver Eye Awards. Shortlisted for the Silver Eye Award in thedocumentary feature category, Martin Mareček's Solar Eclipse follows twoCzech experts who electrified buildingsin a remote Zambian village and now revisit the place after four years.Competing in the documentary short category, The Chronicle of Oldrich S. byRudolf Šmíd capturesthe peculiar one-sentence diary a man who has been recording everyday events for over 20 years.

Austria and Poland are strongly represented among thenominees. Out of a total of six Austrian nominees, five are in the documentaryfeature category. Among them, for instance, Nikolaus Geyrhalter's Abendlandthat takes us on a long journey across nighttime Europe, and Ruth Beckermann's American Passages that travels across the United States. Polishfilmmaker Tomasz Wolski brings a remarkable documentary film titled Doctorsthat follows the daily efforts of surgeons at a Polish hospital. In ArgentinianLesson, director Wojciech Staron captures the events that unfolded duringhis family's stay in Argentina. Another outstanding documentary is Motherlandor Death by Russian director Vitaly Manskiy that puts an end to anyromantic ideas about Cuba, a country whose image is strikingly different fromits reality.

East Silver's year-round support and promotion of East European documentary films at variousinternational festivals and markets is implemented under the East Silver Caravan. East Silver TV Focus serves toprovide documentary films with more opportunities for international TVbroadcast.

Thanks to the East Silver Caravan, Erika Hníková'sMatchmaking Mayor enjoyed screenings at Hot Docs, Canada; DocAviv,Israel; Antenna IDFF, Australia; Bafici Buenos Aires, and Berlinale. VítKlusák's All for the Goodof the World and Nosovice was in competition at DOCSDF Mexico City,ZagrebDox, and Trieste Film Festival. Also in last year's East Silver Caravan,Tomáš Kudrna's AllThat Glitters received the main award at Cronograf, Moldova, and appearedin the lineup of One World Romania.

This year's Doc Launch presentation includes 9 outstanding documentary films slated for theatricalrelease over the next year. The presentation allows filmmakers to introducetheir soon-to-be-released films to tens of international industry guests- commissioning editors, buyers, distributors, sales agents, and film fund andfestival representatives. Following the presentation that will also featurefilm clips, the producers and filmmakers will attend one-on-one meetingswith selected industry guests to secure further support.

At the presentation, Pavel Štingl and Jiří Konečnýwill pitch Eugenic Minds, a film that questions the boundaries betweenscience and pseudo-science using unique archive footage. Slovak filmmaker MiroRemo, whose previous film Arsy-Versy received awards at a number ofinternational festivals, is attending with Comeback (producer BarbaraHarumová Hessová), a social probe into the life of prisoners. A seasoned criminal is the subject ofFather (dir. Marat Sargsyan, p. DagneVildžiunaite). Sofia’s Last Ambulance(dir. Ilian Metev, p. S. Juričić, D. Gotschev, I. Trost) uncovers some of theabsurdities faced by doctors and nurses in Bulgaria. UB Lama (dir. EgleVertelyte, p. Arunas Matelis, Lukas Trimonis) follows a Mongolian boy on hisquest to become a Buddhistmonk. Latvian producer Ilona Bicevska is coming to Jihlava with 15 Young by Young, a documentary project by 15 young filmmakersfrom countriesthat were part of the former USSR. Trainsof Thoughts (dir. Timo Novotny, p. Ulrich Gehmacher, Austria) is anaudiovisual essay roaming subwaysystems in different parts of the world; TheLast Black Sea Pirates (dir.Svetoslav Stoyanov, p. Martichka Bozhilova) documents the clash between a group of wannabe piratesand the outside world, and the German-Italian co-production No Peace Without War(dir. L. Castore, A. Cohen, p. A. C. Renninger, P. Benzi) is a portrait of Polish siblings.

On top of the main events, the IDF Industry Programme will also be open tobroader audiences with an insight into the work of several notable filmmakers.Swedish filmmaker Erik Gandini, Polish filmmaker Marcin Koszalka,Lithuanian filmmaker Audrius Stonys, and Russian filmmaker,producer and festival director Vitaly Manskiy will host special masterclasses to discuss their filmsand creative methods.

CASESTUDIES
A case study hosted byGeorgian filmmaker Salome Jashi will offer a behind-the-scenes look at thedevelopment, production and funding of her documentary film Bakhmaro, completed with IDF's support. What's it like for a WestEuropean producer in Eastern Europe? Answers will be provided in a case studyon the documentary film Jack, the Balkans & I hosted by Fleur Knoppertsand Denis Vaslin of the Dutch production company Volya Films. In their presentation Documentary Exhibition inthe U.S., Sally Berger (MoMA,USA) and independentfestival programmer IrenaKovářová willoutline various ways in which documentary films reach American audiences.

LECTURES
The process ofdocumentary production and distribution has been undergoing radical changes throughout the world. The fast-changing rulesand technological developments in the media landscape have had a huge impact onnot only the development of documentary films and their availability toaudiences, but also on the very form of the genre and the way itcommunicates with reality. These andother topics will be discussed in lectures by Finnish expert and longtime YLECE IkkaVehkalahti; formerDirector of Programming at Hot Docs SeanFarnel, and Jakob Høgel of the Danish Film Institute.

TV AND MEDIA MANAGEMENT SEMINAR
This interactiveseminar will focus on current issues of the changing broadcasting market.Broadcasters have to adjust their structure to the new distribution of roles,lower budgets and an increasing demandfor competitiveness. The linear system of broadcasting is at the crossroads.EBU's former director Bjorn Erichsen and ETMA's director PaulPauwels will explore the pressing issues of recent months and years withrepresentatives of East European broadcasters.

PROJECT MARKET
Available to allparticipants of the East European Forum and the East Silver Market, as well asto registered industry guests, the Project Market consists of one-on-one meetingswith commissioning editors, distributors, sales agents, and festivalprogrammers.

CO-PRODUCTION BREAKFASTS
A series of three morningmeetings will provide details on documentary funding and potentialco-production partners in the Baltic states, Romania, and the Czech Republic.

We work with films thatare halfway between the initial idea and completion. We pass our opinions froma privileged and safe position, risking nothing compared to the authors. Nextyear, IDF will take its first steps out of this sheltered place, towards a thrillingfuture and unexplored horizons.

WARSAW: Nominations for the second edition of the FNE Visegrad Prix for best documentary film coproduction from a Visegard country have been announced. The films are all screening in the15th Jihlava International Documentary Film Festival held in Jihlava, Czech Republic (25-30 October 2011) official programme. The final selection will be made by the festival's Between the Seas jury and announced at the festival's closing ceremony.

{mosimage}Triumphantly and under the sounds of the music played by the Limassol Municipal Band, the curtain has risen for the International Short Film Festival of Cyprus. In front of Rialto Theatre, hundreds of viewers welcomed the Band and subsequently accompanied it inside for the Opening Ceremony. The brief documentary by Nounou Skaltsa Alexopoulou evoked emotion in the audience, as it was curated by Michael Cacoyiannis to the memory of whom this year’s Festival is dedicated. The Opening Ceremony was watched by members of the family of Michael Cacoyiannis, representatives of the Cultural Services of the Ministry of Education and Culture, directors, filmmakers and friends of short films.

{mosimage}Following the presentation of the Jury by the Artistic Directors, the Festival was officially inaugurated by the Mayor of Limassol and the competitive program started with an excellent selection of films from Cyprus, Greece, Denmark, Spain, Portugal and Poland, which was warmly applauded.
The night ended with an acoustic performance by Fivos Delivorias, who had his audience mesmerized at the crowded Information Centre next to the theatre.

The Festival has been extremely successful this far and promises to continue to deliver a rich and diverse program until the 22nd of October. More that 100 films from all over the world and night screenings under the stars with films from Paris, Africa and the Middle East. A special tribute to the Cypriot films of yesterday and the best animated films of the past 10 years. A “Making Cinema for Television” masterclass by director Thodoris Papadoulakis and actor Stelios Mainas on the 21st of October, 18:00, at the Information Centre (Art Studio 55).

The Chicago International Film Festival lineup includes Polish films and co-productions supported by the Polish Film Institute. Festival runs October 6 through 20, 2011.

KRET (The Mole) IN MAIN COMPETITION

“The Mole” is a feature debut of Rafael Lewandowski and will represent Polish cinema in the Main Competition of Chicago IFF. Borys Szyc playing the main role in the film won recently the Best Actor award at Montreal International Film Festival. The viewers will also have the chance to watch the latest Paweł Pawlikowski film “Woman In the Fifth”, a French/English/Polish co-production.

ZNIEWAŻONA ZIEMIA (Land of Oblivion / La terre outragee) BY MICHALE BOGANIM IN NEW DIRECTORS COMPETITION

It's a French/German/Ukrainian/Polish co-production starring Andrzej Chyra in one of the leading roles and with Leszek Możdżer's music. The Polish co-producer on this project is Apple Film Production. “Land of Oblivion” was recently presented at Venice and Toronto Film Festivals.

2 POLISH FILMS IN WORLD CINEMA SECTION

Polish animated film about a depraved hedgehog named George, based on a long-running comic book series. The film was directed by Wojtek Wawszczyk, Jakub Tarkowski and Tomasz Leśniak. A Norway/Swedish/Polish co-production “King of Devil’s Island” by Marius Holst will also screen in this section. The Polish co-producer on this project is Opus Film.

SHORTS 2: PEN & PAPER

In this section there will be presented Robert Proch’s “Galeria”. So far the film has been screened at the film festivals in Portugal, Canada and Denmark.
